Castaway is an annual summer boutique music festival taking place on Rottnest Island, off the coast of WA. The festival features line-ups of leading contemporary Australian bands, producers and DJs, playing on a stage on the waters’ edge at Thomson Bay. Castaway performing alumni include featuring RUFUS, Peking Duk, Golden Features, Safia, Gang of Youths, Jarryd James, Bag Raiders, The Kite String Tangle and more. Behind the event are seasoned event maestros Zaccaria Concerts & Events (John Butler Trio, Xavier Rudd, The Cat Empire, Sticky Fingers, Stevie Wonder, Michael Buble, John Farnham) and YYO (Fidelity and POND).
A hugely popular event, Castaway traditionally takes place twice over the Perth summer. “We’re gonna need a bigger island!” has quickly become the Castaway team’s default catch-cry, as beachy-keen good-times crews have flocked to Thomson Bay by the boatload year after year, turning what once was a cosy little island soiree into the most talked-about beach bash this side of the Indian Ocean! Castaway is usually a quick sell-out, with thousands now taking the opportunity to escape the rat race and boat over to Rottnest for a day of dancing on the island.
With six sold-out Castaways already under their belt, Zaccaria & YVO have announced that a 2018 edition of Castaway will descend upon the shores of island paradise Rottnest Island on Sunday March 4th. That’s right – for the first time in Castaway history, the event falls on a Long Weekend! A great opportunity to make a real weekend of it, start early on Saturday and take the opportunity to explore the island, then take it easy on Monday lazing on the beach and washing away all the partying in the ocean.
Castaway lovers are advised to get there any way they can – unlike previous years, where the event has pulled into the Bay twice during one summer, this will be the only Castaway of the WA 2018 summer.
A hand-picked selection of some of Australia’s finest contemporary music acts are lined up to play Castaway’s intimate ocean stage this March. Sassy Sydney band THE PREATURES – oft referred to as 2017’s answer to Fleetwood Mac – will, for the first time, join the Castaway tribe for a rocking good time on the beach. They’ll be performing tracks off their latest album, Girlhood, at Castaway – their driven, infectious sound is sure to have you smiling right the way through sunset.
Joining The Preatures are former tour buddies SAN CISCO, who live a hop, skip and a jump away from the island in Fremantle, and will jump on the ferry to party on the sandy shores of Rottnest Island. Dance with the salty air in your hair to San Cisco favourites SloMo, Awkward and Fred Astaire – these locals-turned-global-heroes are sure to get a lot of love from their hometown crowd.
Recent ARIA-winner ILLY brings his sensational rap talent to Castaway, off the back of his biggest Australian album tour to date. Illy brings a huge energy and earnestness to everything he does; we can’t wait to party with Illy as he makes huge hits like Papercuts, Catch-22 and Swear Jar come alive for us on our island paradise.
Plus more acts still to be announced.
Castaway’s the only WA festival that truly brings out the best of the Australian summer beach lifestyle that West Australians all love: sea-breeze in your hair, brilliant blue waters, beers on the beach, a spectacular sunset… and to top it all off, fantastic live music and barefoot dancing on the sand. Castaway 2018 – get there any way you can!
Tickets are ons ale now from Ticketmaster. Worried about transport costing a pretty penny? Never fear – heavily discounted ferry tickets for Rottnest Express and Rottnest Fast Ferries are available for Castaway ticketholders at the time of ticket purchase.
